TRW Space Systems

Technical Project Lead

Implemented the first flight-approved microprocessor-based subsystem for DSP-series satellites. Designed hardware and software for microprocessor-based spacecraft subsystems. Defined system architectures and implementations for project proposals. Designed system and detailed hardware (Schottky & CMOS) for a real-time flight unit from initial proposal through engineering model test. Hired as part of the TRW fellowship program. Completed Four Proposals for Spacecraft HW & SW.

Major Project: Mission Data Message (MDM)

From Proposal to Engineering Model Test

  • Real Time Communications Control System

Software System Design

  • Architectural approach
  • Software sizing (Final SW @ spec!)
  • System Timing

Hardware Design

  • System Design for four of five boards
  • Detailed Design/ Debug/ Documentation for three boards (250 IC’s)
  • Provided guidance for design of fourth board
  • Approx four jumpers/ board on Eng’g model (none on processor board - 4hr/IC avg)

Designed for Testability

  • One to one mapping between breadboard and Engineering Model (adapter shown above)
  • Each board designed to perform well defined functions
  • Integration plan provided for HW/ SW stubs to be systematically removed as boards were completed.

Hardware Design Highlights

  • CMOS/ I2L/ LS/ S/ SOS
  • Programmable wait states
  • First TRW 9989 flown

Software Design Highlights

  • Interrupt driven system
  • Approx 2k lines total code
  • Coded to be time independent: permitted testing from DC -> full speed
