What
is involved
in building
a site like
this?
The needs of
a volunteer
community
group can be
as diverse
as its
members.
Free-flowing
discussion
and access
to vital
information
about the
activities
of the group
are
essential to
maintaining
continuity
and keeping
members
involved and
in touch
with one
another
despite
their varied
personal
schedules.
This site
was designed
to augment
the regular
weekly
meetings of
an Internet
community
group whose
members are
based in and
around the
West Los
Angeles.
What types of software technologies are used on this site?
Using custom Active Server Pages for discussion, an email list server, and full site search capability, it is structured in a way that will maintain consistency, yet allow the types of interaction, creativity and growth that truly reflect the nature and purpose of this group. Some key technical features of the site include:
-
A completely threaded, custom, Discussion Group designed using Active Server Pages. Unlimited number of groups (controlled by the administrator) and an unlimited number of threaded subjects within the groups. You can include a thumbnail photo with your message (you can see my mug if you go there).
-
There's a search page that lets you search by subject, name, email address, message, etc.
-
An administration section where you can modify and delete specific messages, list and delete by author, list and delete by subject.
-
A full text search engine for searching the contents of the site.
-
E-Mail list server for a moderated discussion group, including ActiveX based component use for SMTP POP3 automated join/leave processing.
